Battlefords restaurant getting a $1.4 million upgrade

A new building with an updated look is coming to a long-established restaurant franchise in the Battlefords.

Construction is set to begin on a $1.4 million, 2,900 sq. ft. Dairy Queen Grill & Chill, next to the existing location on the 1600 block of 100th St. The new restaurant will have 68 seats and a patio with table service, as well as a drive-thru.

Terry Burnett, who has owned the franchise with his wife Jennifer for the past seven years, said their old building wasn’t sufficient anymore.

“We’ve outgrown this [building], and our staff needs some more room to move around,” he said. “Our customers have been asking for something a little newer, a little more efficient, a little more modern.”

The current Dairy Queen restaurant was built in the late 1970s, after a previous location farther north on 100th St. was destroyed by fire.

Burnett said they bought the property next door several years ago to someday incorporate a drive-thru. The building which was already on the property was moved 40 minutes outside of town, and Burnett said it will be in use at the new site.

He said ground would be broken this week, and the plan is for the new restaurant to be open in early December.
