It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marie Adlina Kostiuk, at the age of 84, in Sherwood Park, Alberta, following her courageous two-year journey with cancer.
Marie was born in Fielding, Saskatchewan, to Patrick Francis and Marie Noella Eva Englisbee. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of all who knew her. She was the beloved mother of two children, grandmother of four, and great-grandmother of three.
As a young adult, Marie studied electrocardiography in Prince Albert, SK, where she became a certified cardiology technician in April 1964. She was married in October 1964 and shortly thereafter, she and her husband moved to Thompson, Manitoba where Marie worked in The Thompson General Hospital until they started a family. Then her she devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising her children as well as being an integral part of building and running their family Pic-a-Pop business. She carried many responsibilities, often balancing the demands of work and family while making certain that her children had what they needed.
Marie faced the challenges of life with courage, resilience, and quiet determination. She worked diligently in several roles over her years of marital life, shifting to food services management as a single mother upon moving herself and her two children to North Battleford, SK in 1983. She was well known in the community and within the North Battleford Union Hospital for her hospitality and dedication, while continuing to place her children’s needs at the heart of her efforts. Her astounding work ethic, personal sacrifices, and unwavering dedication provided her family with strength, stability, and love throughout the years. She gave generously of herself, meeting each responsibility with grace and ensuring that her children received the care and support they needed.
She found joy in life’s simple pleasures: completing puzzles, reading, playing card games, and spending time with family and friends. She was very close and fond of her brothers and sisters, making time to visit them which would involve overseas travel – building connections everywhere she went. Marie was generous to both people and animals, someone who was always willing to listen, help, and offer encouragement. Her patience, gentle humor, positive outlook, and ability to smile through life’s challenges made her a comforting presence to those around her. Those who had the privilege to know her will remember and treasure her nurturing spirit, compassion, and thoughtful nature.
Marie was predeceased by her parents, Patrick Francis and Marie Noella Eva Englisbee; her husband David Kostiuk: and her brothers, Joe Englisbee and Jim Brown. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Eileen Englisbee (United Kingdom); her daughters, Davina Marie Kostiuk and her partner, Kevin Stacey (Manitoba), and Lynne Marie Kostiuk and her husband, Ian Stuart Cowie (Alberta); her four grandchildren; her three great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.
Now is the time to hold in our hearts Marie’s love, generosity, strength, and beautiful smile. No doubt she is doing the same for us too. She would want no sorrow but for your memories of her to bring you joy and peace.
A memorial service will be held at Park Place Funeral Home, 51 Broadway Boulevard, Sherwood Park, Alberta, on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow.
