North Stars fall 5-4 in overtime thriller vs the Humboldt Broncos

The North Stars got off to a quick start in the second period. Broncos goaltender Reid Wassermann saved Kaleb Dewar’s initial shot, but Dewar stayed with the rebound and scored five-hole 28 seconds into the period to put the North Stars up 2-1.

Both teams had two power-play opportunities in the second period, but neither could capitalize.

It looked as though the North Stars would take a 2-1 lead into the third period, but Oliver Phillips entered the zone on the right side and scored low glove on Claydon at 18:33.

With less than 90 seconds remaining in the period, Phillips’ second goal of the season brought the fans at Elgar Petersen Arena to their feet and tied the game 2-2.

After two: Tied 2-2

The North Stars had a nearly identical start to the third period, with Dewar scoring 29 seconds into the frame.

This time, Dewar scored on a one-timer from the high slot. Wassermann got a piece of the shot, but the puck trickled through and into the net to give the North Stars a 3-2 lead.

Aidan Bruce appeared to tie the game later in the period, but the goal was disallowed because of goaltender interference and the North Stars maintained their 3-2 lead.

At 7:13, Owen Nelson knocked Kasey Russell Jr.’s pass attempt out of the air in front of the net, turned and scored far side on a backhand. Nelson’s first goal of the season put the North Stars up 4-2.

The Broncos pulled within one at 12:13. A scramble in front left Claydon down in his crease and the puck was knocked into the slot, where Sears fired it into the open net before Claydon could recover, making it 4-3.

With less than four minutes remaining, Sears took a pass in front from Russell Jr. and one-timed it past Claydon from the slot at 16:01, tying the game after the Broncos had trailed by two in the third period.

After three: Tied 4-4

Just 1:10 into overtime, Farrell circled to the point in the offensive zone before taking the puck toward the right side of the net. Claydon made the initial pad save, but Farrell stayed on the puck and jammed it past Claydon’s pad to win the game for Humboldt.

After overtime: Broncos win 5-4

The North Stars will have an immediate opportunity to respond when they host the Broncos in the second half of the home-and-home series on Sept. 26.
