St. Walburg getting ready for 36th annual Blueberry Festival

St. Walburg will see its population multiply for a day as thousands of people are expected to gather for the 36th annual Blueberry Festival.

Bobby Domes, treasurer of the St. Walburg Chamber of Commerce and chair of the Blueberry Festival, said this year’s festival will be the biggest one yet.

“We are currently sitting at 156 vendors, plus six trailer vendors and 10 food trucks. Generally, we have 130 vendors,” he said.

“This year, we have everything from 3D printing to homemade crafts, homemade food, sublimation, tumblers, jewelry — all sorts of things.”

Held on Aug. 22, the weekend will kick off Friday with dinner and a dance in the parish hall, beginning at 5 p.m.

There will be two sittings for a roast beef dinner, at 5 and 6 p.m., before the dance, which is expected to run until around midnight. Dinner costs $25 a plate, while the dance is free to attend.

After Friday night’s festivities, Main Street will fill up for the festival Saturday, starting with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. Following the pancake breakfast, Domes said the festival will feature live entertainment and vendors from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival will also include a show and shine featuring antique cars, tractors and other vehicles.

Domes said organizers expect between 5,000 and 7,000 people, so he recommends arriving as early as possible for those hoping to buy blueberries.

“We don’t actually know how many vendors will show up with blueberries until the day of. Those vendors don’t pre-register. They just show up and sell whatever they have. The blueberry tables are located at the east entrance by the St. Walburg Inn.”

Admission to the largest Blueberry Festival in the event’s history is free.
