North Stars name Zacharias as assistant captain

The Battlefords North Stars have named the last of their leadership group for the 2026-27 SJHL season.

North Stars forward Raiden Zacharias has been named an assistant captain, joining fellow assistants Owen Nelson and Finlay Klippenstein, and captain Owen Dyck.

Zacharias was acquired by the North Stars from the Melville Millionaires last off-season. He scored 33 points, including nine goals and 24 assists, in 51 games during the 2025-26 season. Head coach and general manager Connor Logan said Zacharias’s composure was a major factor in the decision.

“The evolution of Raiden as a player, as a leader — we watched the influence that he had on the room, especially later in the year. He’s a calming guy, very calming demeanour,” Logan said.

“In some key moments for us throughout the year, we watched the influence that he was able to have on other guys, and he really kept us on an even keel through some tough moments. That was the kind of leadership that we feel you need in your leadership group.”

As Logan discussed the decision, the word “accountability” came up repeatedly.

“He’s done nothing but take accountability for his game, for where he wants his game to go, where he wants his group to go. He wants to take a step on the ice and in the room, and to us, that motivation to be at your best on the ice and to try to help the people around you get to that point as well.”

Zacharias is no stranger to wearing a letter. He captained the Saskatoon Blazers of the Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) to a league championship in 2023-24. Logan said that experience was not a major factor in giving Zacharias an ‘A’, but it was something the team considered.

“It was something we brought up for sure. It shows that he can be a leader on a successful team. He’s just shown that he’s won before. He knows what it takes to win.”

With their leadership group set for 2026-27, the North Stars now await the start of the season. The pre-season begins Sept. 7 and the regular season opens Sept. 18, with the Kindersley Klippers visiting the Access Communications Centre for both games.
