It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of James (Jim) Walter Salisbury of Mullingar, Saskatchewan, on June 19, 2026, at the age of 87. Jim’s witty sense of humor and love for farming will forever be cherished by his loving wife of 52 years, Violet; children, Patrick (Kelli), Jamie (Wayne Coleman), and Julie (Jack Scott); grandchildren, Kylie, Colton, Tyson, Walker, Kalen, Rylee, Karsen, Georgia, Trigg, Danika, and Scarlet; as well as his last surviving brother, Gary (Louise) and family; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours, and people he met along the way.
He was predeceased by his father, Thomas; mother, Georgina; and siblings, George, Lorne, Shirley, Ralph, Earl, Harvey, David, Nina, and Lorraine.
Jim was born on April 18, 1939, on the family farm near Mullingar, SK. His early life was spent working on the family farm, most notably hauling countless loads of feed with horses throughout any weather—ensuring that the cattle were always fed. He started farming at the early age of 14 with his family.
Later, he worked a couple of camp jobs in British Columbia and Alberta in the early 1970s before returning home to farm alongside his brothers. By 1974, he and Violet had married and, shortly after, began homesteading their own farm, where they would raise their three children and countless head of cattle.
Jim took great pride in finishing his own farm-raised fat cattle. He lived and breathed farming—he loved his cattle, his horses, his land, and always had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. Jim enjoyed working—especially anything related to cattle. He enjoyed heading to auction sales, where he would never come home empty-handed; or pass up a good bargain.
Jim enjoyed seeing new country, especially ‘Sunday drives’, where he could check his cattle and pastures while listening to ‘Call for Country’ and the latest news along the way.
He always led by example, with no time to explain—he would lead by doing. Even during his battle with cancer, he managed to do his morning chores and a lot of field work right up until a couple of weeks before his passing.
Jim was proud of all he had built. He passed down his knowledge, values, and hard work ethic to not only his children, but also his grandchildren.
Please join the family for a graveside service at the Mullingar Cemetery on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 2:00 p.m—lunch and refreshments to follow at the Mayfair Hall.
