COMING BACK TO THE CIRCLE

BATC and Battlefords Area Pride partner for second Two-Spirit Forum

Jun 14, 2026 | 10:00 AM

June 24 will mark the second Two-Spirit Forum in North Battleford, hosted in partnership by Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC) and Battlefords Area Pride.

The forum will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Western Development Museum and is free for the public to attend.

BATC Two-Spirit co-ordinator Shashonee Paddy said last year’s forum drew enough interest from the community that organizers wanted to hold it again. This year, she said they want to focus on where Two-Spirit identity originated and what it means to be Two-Spirit.

“We brought forward our program, which is called the Pekiwewin project. That just means coming back to the land, coming back to the circle. That was one of the main objectives we wanted to bring forward with the Two-Spirit community was bringing them back into our culture,” Paddy said.

“What I understood from our elders was that Two-Spirits were held in high regard. Due to colonization, we lost those teachings and the Two-Spirit, they were healers, teachers. They had many roles within our community and especially with our medicine lodges, they were always in the middle or on the outside circle, just kind of observing and protecting our nation.”

The forum will include several presenters, including:

  • Jennifer Lenny, Two-Spirit Woodland Cree and Métis drumming group
  • Tiberius Fayant-McLeod, Two-Spirit advocate, researcher and podcast host
  • Syndel Thomas Kozar, arts experience

Local Indigenous culture advocate and author Jordan Weenie will serve as MC for the event.

While attendance is free, seating is limited.

For BATC and Battlefords Area Pride, Paddy said it was important to hold the forum in June to coincide with both Pride Month and National Indigenous History Month as they work to bring Two-Spirit people back into the circle.

“It was always important to bring that back into our communities and to open up being more inclusive and creating those safe spaces too for our LGBT community, especially with the Two-Spirit,” Paddy said.

Paddy said the forum is open to anyone with questions, whether they are part of the Two-Spirit or LGBT community, an ally or simply someone wanting to learn more.

“This would be the perfect opportunity for everybody to come and experience and learn.”
