Wilkie to ‘Jump into Summer’ this weekend

A parade, baseball, bouncy castles, a classic car show and a Bon Jovi and Journey tribute concert are set to usher in the start of summer as Wilkie prepares for its Jump Into Summer celebration this weekend.

The two-day event begins Friday evening with a 7 p.m. parade featuring more than 30 entries before continuing Saturday with a full slate of family activities across the community.

“If kids want to join in, they can come on their bikes and join in the parade,” said Lori Fenrich, director of parks and recreation.

She said Saturday’s lineup includes Wilkie Minor Ball Day, Cool Castles bouncy houses at Wilkie Regional Park, the Wilkie Museum Show and Shine and the Prairie Oasis Petting Zoo before the evening wraps up with a Jersey Boulevard tribute concert.

While many of the community traditions are returning, Fenrich said the concert is the main new highlight this year.

“It is on the arena ice surface, so there should be some fun for everybody.”

The celebration has long served as Wilkie’s unofficial start to the summer season, although it was paused for three years during the COVID-19 pandemic before returning last year.

The event has also evolved over time, with the former slow-pitch tournament giving way to a new partnership.

“Instead, we do it in conjunction with minor ball day for the kids now just to have it all on the same day and same weekend,” she said.

For Fenrich, the weekend is ultimately about bringing the community together before summer holidays begin.

“It’s a great kickoff to summer while the kids are still in school, and it’s the start of the whole summer season before everybody takes off on holidays just to enjoy what our small town has to offer and get together and have some fun before the summer season truly kicks off.”

Despite forecasts calling for cooler conditions with a 40 per cent chance of showers on Friday, organizers expect the festivities to proceed as planned.

“Rain or shine, things are going to happen, I believe,” she stated.

“So, possibly for the parade, you might just have to wear your hoodie and jacket and stuff and still enjoy the parade,” Fenrich said.
