ennette Alzie Beckman (nee Hemmerling) was born December 29, 1935 at the family home near Landis, SK (Sec. 36, Tp. 38, Rge. 18, W3rd) and passed into the presence of the Lord on June 3, 2026. She was the eldest daughter of 5 children (Arnold, Ruby, Iver and Dwight) born to Pearl and Martin Hemmerling. Growing up doing manual chores on the family farm, Jennette developed a strong work ethic and fortitude that she later channelled into her passion for teaching. She taught for 35 years at the Biggar School Unit – chiefly grades 5 or 6 at Cando Central School, which comprised 30 of those years, describing her students as “[her] children”. Teaching was the only profession she ever wanted to do. Jennette credits the ministry of Budd and Evelyn Chartier for her early faith in Jesus – she strongly believed a personal relationship with Christ was the most important thing one could develop. On May 21, 1957, Jennette married Hubert Beckman and they had one daughter, Suzette, in 1964.
Although they later divorced, Jennette still listed her wedding day as one of her fondest memories, with all other favourite memories revolving around her family: the birth of her daughter, her parents’ 50th anniversary celebration, and the births of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In another life, Jennette admitted she would have liked to be a singer, but she got to pursue this desire in her later years when she met John Archer. Together, they sang country and gospel music as volunteers in care homes, and she even learned to play the bass guitar at age 81! She was an involved grandparent and great-grandparent, never forgetting a birthday, and forever shining her teacher spirit: always a story at the ready and eager to spend quality time reading to kids, playing games or chatting. During her last days, she expressed regret that she wouldn’t be able to plant her yearly flower garden, but continued to pour love on her family, and even sang the chorus of the hymn Only Believe, although she had lost the ability to open her eyes.
She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her daughter Suzette Beckman, granddaughters Chelsey (Paul) Dase and Jennessa (Morgan) Bancroft and her 9 great-grandchildren: Israel, Ophelia, Emmylou, Matilda, Reuben and Elisa Dase; and Lincoln, Sterling and Roman Bancroft. She was predeceased by her parents, Pearl and Martin Hemmerling, sister Ruby Beckman, brother Arnold Hemmerling and dear friend John Archer.
Funeral Service for Jennette will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026 at 11:00 a.m., at Foursquare mission church located at 691 103 St, North Battleford, SK.
