Former North Stars draft pick kicks off baseball season with the Saskatoon Berries

Jackson Fox is swapping skates for cleats this summer, with the former Battlefords North Stars draft pick joining the Saskatoon Berries of the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL).

With a 4-1 record, Fox’s Berries currently sit atop the WCBL early in the year.

“We’ve been playing really good baseball,” he said.

The 19-year-old starting pitcher from Saskatoon was drafted by the North Stars in the third round, 36th overall, in the 2023 SJHL Draft. Other players taken by the North Stars that year include Sam and Will Kirwan, as well as Carter Geysen.

When Fox was originally drafted, he was transparent about the possibility of choosing baseball over hockey.

“They knew it was in the cards. We had good communication all the way through. They said if you ever want to come back and try and play hockey, there’s always a spot back here.”

Fox had planned to play hockey in the Battlefords last season, but instead jumped at an opportunity to play baseball in Kansas with the Cloud County Community College Thunderbirds of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

“I really kind of just made a last-minute decision. I think I made it in July last year, right before I would have went to my college,” said Fox. “I loved it down there. It’s in the Jayhawk League in Kansas, and it’s a good league, really good baseball. We had a really good team this year. We’re ranked second nationally, which is a really cool experience to be on and be a part of that squad.”

On the mound, the right-hander features a fastball that touches 91 miles per hour, along with a changeup, slider, and curveball.

Fox has pitched five innings so far this season, striking out six batters while allowing just one hit and no runs.

Aside from being a North Stars draft pick, Fox also has other connections to the organization, having played AAA with the Kirwan brothers and Keegan Nash with the Swift Current Legionnaires in the 2024-25 season.
