It is with great sadness we say goodbye to our Mom, Jean Barbara McHarg, who passed away on May 14, 2026 at the age of 97. Mom was a strong Christian and we are comforted to know she is finally pain free, at peace and surrounded by love.
Mom was born November 21, 1928 and grew up in Melfort, Saskatchewan. She always said she had a wonderful childhood, learning gymnastics from her Dad, piano from her Mom, being spoiled by big brother Jack, and singing, skating and hanging out with her best friend Doris.
Mom loved music and had a beautiful singing voice. She also had her Grade 10 in piano. She encouraged all of us to learn an instrument or participate in music in some way. She was open- minded to the music we brought home in our teens, from light rock to heavy metal, although country music was not welcomed! Her very favourite group was Santana and we all have fond memories of her dancing to their music as she did her housework.
Mom had a soft spot for animals and we always had cats and dogs, often rescued from somewhere. She also cleaned aquariums, fed turtles, and allowed a garter snake for a short stay. She often said she preferred her pets to kids as they were better behaved!
Mom was a huge sports fan. When we were young she was cheering for the Toronto Maple Leafs, when there were only 6 teams in the NHL. She and Dad had season tickets for the Riders and never missed a home game through all the Rider lean years in the 70’s and 80’s. There was always next year! We are glad she finally got to see them win a few Grey Cups. Mom originally cheered for the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, but as soon as we had a team in Montreal she became a loyal fan, and for the past many years she never missed a Blue Jay game. She also loved to watch figure skating, horse races, the Olympics and curling.
Mom was always fiercely independent. After Dad died in 1990 she lived on her own until, at the age of 79, she moved to North Battleford to be closer to family. Failing health finally meant she needed help when she was 95, and she moved to Harwood Manor. Over the years she worked as a bookkeeper and in an interior design shop. She attended the Presbyterian Church, sang in the choir, did puzzles to keep her mind active, and kept her great sense of humour right to the end.
Left to mourn her passing and honor her memory are her daughter Katharine (William Hanson), son Kent, son Kevin(Barbara)and their daughters Kaitlyn (Matthew McTaggart, sons Bowen and August), Kelsey, Christena (Caleb Tremblay) and Carly (Aaron Machtans and son Hunter), daughter-in-law Tammy and sons Jedediah and Jacob, and sisters-in-law Isa Tieken and Edna McHarg. Mom was predeceased by her husband Robert Gordon McHarg, her son Kim Douglas, infant son Perry David, her parents Edgar and Ellen Carwardine, her brother Jack (Phyllis), and her in-laws John (Alice) McHarg, Marion (Charles)Crockett, Anna (Ted) McKee, Violet (Lou) Codling, Martin (Beryl) McHarg, JohnTieken, and David McHarg. We will have a family service for Mom at the Melfort Cemetery later this summer.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Harwood Manor for their care for Mom the past 2 years. Thank you Bre for your patience and compassion, Sharon and the nursing staff for your vigilant care, and to Christina, Dorie, Khem, Ronan, and the many caregivers who looked after Mom and treated her like their own family, words cannot express how much that meant to us.
