Battlefords North Stars defenceman Owen Dyck named captain for the 2026-27 season

“There’s only one name that ever felt right in terms of wearing that captaincy, and that was Owen Dyck. Myself, Owen Lamb, Wylie Riendeau, we all mutually agreed that was the next guy,” he said.

“We went through some of the players as well and had them give us their interpretation of what they felt the leadership group could look like next year and probably asked eight, 10, 12 guys and anonymously across the board. It was Owen Dyck. He was going to be our guy.” 

As described by Logan, a significant reason for Dyck being named captain is the fact that he “embodies what it is to be a North Star.” 

“You look at the different players who’ve worn the letter, the type of people they are. Humble, hardworking, understand Battlefords as a place, understand what the team means to the community.” 

Logan said he works with his leadership group and has already seen some differences in Dyck’s approach to the team.  

“Our conversations in terms of standard, culture, the guys, where we can improve, how we can pull more out of some guys, what we want in our dressing room. It’s all there and he understands it and I can tell he’s already taken such an ownership over that captaincy and our team, and it’s been amazing so far to see just him in this role.” 

Dyck will follow in former North Stars captain Anthony Campbell’s footsteps. “He’s always on his game,” said Dyck. “He’s always working, working his hardest, just doing everything he can to get a win. Treats everyone with respect, doesn’t put up with anything that shouldn’t be going on.”

As he approaches wearing the C on his chest next season, Dyck discussed what kind of captain he strives to be.  

“My biggest thing is leading by example, just working my hardest every day, doing everything it takes, just setting a good example that way for the group. Also, speaking up and just keeping everyone in line, I guess those two things.” 

Dyck will serve as the captain for a team for the very first time in his junior career for the 2026-27 season.
