Most BUFC teams will play in Division 2 this season, while the U13 girls squad moves up to Division 1, a step that requires a greater level of preparation and commitment.

“Our athletes all have individual goals that we’ve sat down and discussed with them. Each of those goals will also have things that they can work on,” said Huxley, who coaches the U13 girls team.

“How will we eat? How do we prepare for high-performance events? How do we maintain that energy throughout our games? How do we ensure that we’re hydrated on hot and cold days?”

Huxley said the team is also helping players build relationships with coaches and clubs as some athletes may pursue post-secondary soccer opportunities in the future.

Fitness and recovery will also be a major focus, with some players expected to play “almost every minute of every game.”

“What does recovery look like for them? How do they stretch when they are sore and communicate what’s sore or injured? Then how do we work with medical to get them back to 100 per cent,” posed Huxley.

Two players from the U13 girls team will also compete with Team Forge of the Prairie Soccer League, which features athletes from across southern Saskatchewan.

As BUFC prepares for the outdoor season, the Battlefords Youth Soccer Inc. (BYSI) local league is already underway, with players from U5 to U13 taking part.
