Town of Battleford commits $3.7M to proposed regional arena and event centre

The Town of Battleford has agreed to a one-time $3.7 million capital contribution in support of the proposed Regional Twin Pad Arena and Event Center.

In his report to council, CAO Landon Chambers presented the administration’s recommendation to deem the project of regional importance. During the May 4 meeting, councillors agreed to the importance of the arena and event centre and voted for Option 2, which minimizes the financial impact to the municipality.

Option 2 states: “The Town would provide a one-time capital contribution of $3.70 million but would not seek an ownership or equity position in the facility.”

The other options presented to council included a complete withdrawal from the project or a $5 million capital contribution with equity position and 19 per cent operating and maintenance costs.

“Our residents didn’t give us a mandate to own and operate two different rinks, and we do have one to operate ourselves,” said Mayor Ames Leslie during the council meeting. “I think we have always been a good neighbour of the region, and we are always looking to help out our neighbours.”

For Leslie, Option 2 best represents the continued partnership.

“This allows us to maintain a level of affordability in our community. We are still adding significant amenities and facilities. I am glad we have been able to come to a spot where we can support our neighbours in this project.”
