North Stars prospect wins bronze at the Telus Cup with Regina

Grady Hodgins made his presence felt at the Telus Cup.

The North Stars prospect scored in the bronze medal game and finished with three points (2G-1A) in seven games, helping the Regina Pat Canadians secure a 6-2 win over the Okanagan Rockets to claim bronze at the national men’s AAA championship in Peterborough, ON from April 20-26.

“We all knew we had to step up for the occasion,” said Hodgins. “Play harder and get through injuries and play through tough times. We knew what we could do and it turned out well.”

Hodgins, who is signed to the North Stars for the upcoming season, said the tournament offered a glimpse of the next level.

“Almost every player I’m sure is moving on to the Western League or the OHL, Junior A, wherever they are. Every guy at that level has the ability to play,” said Hodgins, who had some key takeaways from the tournament that he can apply to the SJHL level.

“You got to do what you got to do to win. At that level, every team has good players and star players and depends on how your coaching is and what’s going on,” he said. “Every team’s got to adapt and do video, and they have to learn how to play a certain way to defeat the other team. It’s almost like chess.”

Few people watched Hodgins more closely this season than Pat Canadians play-by-play commentator Ardenn Lloyd, who said the forward’s impact goes well beyond the scoresheet.

“He doesn’t look that intimidating, then you get a dump in, and he will make defenders lives miserable,” said Lloyd.

“He created goals countless times throughout the regular season and postseason just on forechecks. Stripping a loose puck, forcing a bad pass. They don’t all go on his stat sheet, but he creates so much.”

Grady’s father and Pat Canadians head coach said not winning the national championship makes it easy to forget the success from the year, but it was still a great tournament and season for the team, which also captured its second straight SMAAAHL championship.

“A great group of kids that I loved working with,” he said.

Just as he did with the Pat Canadians, Hodgins looks to make an impact in a North Stars uniform next season.
