Bike and Tool Auction turns unclaimed items into support for local programs

Tomorrow night, community members have the opportunity to take part in this year’s Bike and Tool Auction.

During the evening, people can bid on items, with all proceeds going to the Battlefords Healthcare Foundation and Battlefords Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP).

“All of the items in the auction went missing from their original owners and were recovered by RCMP or Community Safety Officers (CSO),” said Doug Fehr, chairperson for COPP. “After a period of time of them not being claimed, RCMP puts them up for auction.”

During the auction last year, over $7,500 was raised for the local organizations. This helps with overhead costs, along with training and equipment for COPP patrollers.

“There will be about 200 bikes, and a wide selection of tools. I would anticipate that we will surpass what we made last time,” he said.

The auction will feature all types of bikes with varying conditions. Ranging from adult to children’s bikes, some that need repairs and many that are in perfect condition. There will also be a section for bike parts, including seats, tires, or break lines.

“In terms of tools, we’ve got everything from cordless tools to lawnmowers, snowblowers, a dehumidifier, a steam cleaner… There’s just a huge variety of stuff,” he said.

If these items were not auctioned off, Fehr said they would likely end up in the landfill.

“There is only so much space that the RCMP and the CSOs have to store these bikes and tools. It’s a great way to avoid putting stuff into the landfill and it’s a great way for citizens to get a decent working, and sometimes a very good working condition item at a steeply discounted price.”

The event will begin at 5 p.m. at the Northland Power Curling Centre with a $5 barbecue and item viewing. At 6 p.m., the auction will begin with customers having the ability to pay with cash or card.
