Battleford playground set for upgrade with new structure coming this summer

Children in Battleford will soon have a new play structure to explore.

Town Mayor, Ames Leslie said the ACT playground, located on 35th Street in Battleford, will be replaced before the end of July.

“Unfortunately, these things need to be replaced. It’s always a good thing when we can replace an aging, infrastructure and with something brand new and do it for less than what we had thought.”

This upgrade was made possible due to a $75,000 donation made by Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Community Development Corporation (BATC). The town also made a contribution of an additional $50,000, coming in under budget for the project.

This new structure will feature a modern style with new features to ensure safety.

“There are some things that aren’t allowed anymore that will probably have to go away. We heard that the swings have to be relocated, so there’ll be some planning to go, but hopefully the neighbourhood kids will enjoy the new features,” said Leslie.

If able, the town hopes to donate the existing structure to a neighbouring community in need of a possible upgrade.

“We’ll have to make sure it’s done in a way that doesn’t create any liability for the town, but we’ll definitely look to see if there’s somebody who could utilize it for sure.”

Leslie said he is excited to have the new playground in place as soon as possible.

“I live very close to it, and the sound of the kids’ laughter and playing all day long on weekends and evenings, it just brings an ambience and enjoyment to the neighbourhood.”
