TERRIERS TAKE GAME ONE

North Stars fall 3-2 in close game one battle with the Yorkton Terriers

Apr 4, 2026 | 12:30 AM

The Battlefords North Stars have gone down 1-0 in the SJHL semi-finals after a 3-2 loss to the Yorkton Terriers.

It was an opposite start to the series for both teams as opposed to the first round. The Terriers fell in game one of the first round, while the North Stars won the opening game in round one.

The North Stars took a 1-0 lead at the 9:36 mark of the first period on the power play. Alessio Nardelli scored his fifth goal in the playoffs, firing the puck past Callum Creig to give the North Stars the lead in the opening frame.

After one: 1-0 North Stars

Josh Knittig gave the North Stars a 2-0 lead early in the second period at the 1:42 mark. Knittig put a shot on net from the left-hand side that was initially saved by Creig, but Knittig picked up the rebound before bringing it to the backhand and sliding it into the net to double the lead for the North Stars.

The Terriers got one back late in the period. At 17:28, 16-year-old Trae Peterson scored his first SJHL goal, putting the puck top shelf on the short side past the glove of Kaeden Serpa to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the intermission.

After two: 2-1 North Stars

Early in the second period, the Terriers tied it up. Peterson had a chance for his second of the game but was stopped. However, Peterson got the rebound and brought it to the left side of the net, pulling Serpa out of position before passing the puck out to Cash Lanigan, who scored past a sprawling Serpa to tie it at 2-2 at 1:41.

The Terriers took the lead at 9:23 when Jye Zawatsky walked across the offensive zone into the slot and scored a backhand top shelf past Serpa to put Yorkton up 3-2.

Not long after, Kobe Sawyer got a chance to tie things up for the North Stars with a penalty shot. Sawyer went backhand, but Creig made a toe save to keep things at 3-2.  Creig stood tall for the remainder of the period, stopping all 10 shots he saw in the final frame on the way to a 30 save performance on 32 shots.

Final score: 3-2 Terriers

Series: 1-0 Terriers

The loss was the North Stars first loss of the year when taking a lead into the third period. In the regular season and playoffs combined, they came into the game with a 29-0 record when leading after two periods.

The North Stars will look to even up the series on Saturday. Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey begins at 7:00. The Ultra Print pregame show is half an hour before puck drop on CJNB/CJNS when the North Stars look to even the series.
