Lloydminster teen charged with second-degree murder in fatal Alberta highway shooting

Mar 24, 2026 | 3:02 PM

An 18-year-old man from Lloydminster has been charged with second-degree murder in a fatal shooting on a highway south of Edmonton.

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit says Jimmy Gassner was arrested March 21 in Canoe Lake, Sask., following the March 14 killing of 22-year-old Birinder Singh.

Police allege a pickup truck pulled alongside Singh’s black 2012 Honda Civic on Highway 2 near Township Road 490 around 2:50 p.m., where a firearm was discharged into the vehicle. Singh died at the scene.

Gassner remains in custody and is being transported to Alberta for a future court appearance.

Investigators have recovered a grey 2022 Ford F-150 believed to be linked to the shooting.

RCMP have not released a motive and say details about the circumstances remain limited as the investigation continues.

“Despite the laying of these charges, we know that there will be many questions regarding suspects and motivations, “said Staff Sergeant John Brown of the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit in a statement issued Tuesday.

“Please understand that our ability to answer these questions is limited while our officers continue their important work.”

The RCMP says they will provide additional updates as the investigation continues.
