North Stars cap off dominant weekend with 6-1 win over La Ronge

Capped off by three goals on the power play, the Battlefords North Stars got a 6-1 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves (8-32-3-1, 4th in UPL Division), outscoring them 9-2 over the weekend. 

The North Stars (30-12-3-2, 1st in Nutrien Division) got an early opportunity on the power play and took advantage when Owen Nelson scored his 14th goal of the season to put the North Stars up 1-0 just 3:52 into the first period. Linken Fisher had the primary assist on the goal, extending his point and assist streak to nine games. 

The North Stars doubled down on the man advantage at the 9:43 mark when Fisher floated a shot on from the point and Kobe Sawyer deflected it out of the air and through the five hole of Ice Wolves goalie Graham Brown. Sawyer’s 15th goal of the season put the North Stars up 2-0, a score that they held onto heading into the second frame. 

After one: 2-0 North Stars 

While it was a dominant weekend overall for the North Stars, the second period was maybe the most lopsided out of any of the six frames throughout the weekend.

Just 12 seconds into the period, a failed clearing attempt by the Ice Wolves led to Drew Williamson picking up the puck and finding Nelson in the slot. Nelson went to the forehand and roofed the puck to give the North Stars the 3-0 advantage with his second goal of the game. 

The Nelson-Williamson connection continued at the 6:59 mark. This time, Nelson found Williamson in the slot, and Williamson scored top shelf on the backhand to make it 4-0 North Stars with his 13th goal of the season. 

Later in the period at 8:10, there was a puck battle in the corner of the Ice Wolves zone. Anthony Campbell scooped up the puck before bringing it across the crease and sliding it past Brown on the far side. The North Stars captain’s 18th of the year gave the North Stars a 5-0 lead not even halfway through the game. 

At the 12:23 mark, Finlay Klippenstein scored the third power play goal of the game for the North Stars, tipping in a Gavin Granger shot from the point to make it 6-0 North Stars. Klippenstein extended his team lead in goals with his 23rd of the year, which also leads all rookies across the league. 

After two: 6-0 North Stars 

The third period started with fireworks when Linken Fisher and Jaxen Smyth dropped the gloves in the North Stars zone. After exchanging blows, Fisher took Smith down to the ice. 

The North Stars continued to be all over the Ice Wolves in the third period, putting 20 shots on net, but Graham Brown shut things down in the third and stopped all 20. 

Just like Friday’s matchup, the North Stars lost their shutout bid in the third period. Spencer Michnik made a save on William Knox, but Quinn Tavender picked up the rebound and slid it past Michnik on the backhand to get the Ice Wolves on the board and make it 6-1 at 11:36. 

While that was the last goal of the game, the fighting didn’t stop. Kobe Sawyer and Carter Turchak dropped the gloves in the Ice Wolves zone. They tossed each other around and both landed several shots and after fighting for what felt like at least a minute, Turchak took Sawyer down to the ice. 

Other scrums ensued through the third period, but no other gloves were dropped and the North Stars held on for the commanding 6-1 victory, Michnik made 22 saves on 23 shots in the victory. 

Final score: 6-1 North Stars 

With the Flin Flon Bombers win over the Kindersley Klippers, the North Stars stay five points behind the Bombers for the first-place spot in the SJHL. 

The North Stars will face off with the Kindersley Klippers on Feb. 16 for a Family Day affair. It will be a 4:00 pm puck drop on CJNB/CJNS when the North Stars continue to chase the first-place spot in the league.
