North Stars take on the Nipawin Hawks on the road as chase for the top spot continues

Looking for their fourth straight victory, the Battlefords North Stars are taking a trip to Nipawin to face off with the SJHL’s fourth place Hawks. 

The North Stars (28-11-3-2, 1st in Nutrien Division) are fresh off a weekend sweep against the Warman Wolverines, where they won 8-5 on Friday, then 6-5 in the shootout on Saturday. 

Drew Williamson and Alessio Nardelli were the stars of the weekend. Williamson had five points (2G-3A) in two games while Nardelli had three points (2G-1A) plus the shootout winner on Saturday. 

Like the North Stars, the Hawks (28-14-1-1, 2nd in UPL Division) are also looking for their fourth straight victory. In their last game, the Hawks got a 5-4 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves. Jack Janzen and Sean Shiels both had a pair of goals in the victory. 

With a 2-0-1-0 record against the Hawks, the North Stars are looking to win the season series tonight. The last time these two teams faced off was on Jan. 6 when the North Stars beat the Hawks 6-5 in a crazy comeback victory.

In that matchup, the Hawks had a 5-2 lead late in the second period before the North Stars scored four unanswered, including three in the third and a shorthanded game winning goal by Josh Knittig with just 12 seconds left in the third period. 

The last time the North Stars were in Nipawin resulted in a 4-1 win for the North Stars on Nov. 15, 2025. Kaeden Serpa had a shutout bid going late into that game, but it was broken with just 13 seconds left in the game. 

Serpa is expected to get the start for the North Stars, while the likelihood is that the Hawks will turn to Gage Roberts between the pipes. Roberts is riding two straight shutouts and hasn’t allowed a goal in over 125 minutes of play. 

When facing the Hawks, North Stars captain Anthony Campbell leads the squad in scoring with nine points (2G-7A) in three games. On the other side, Eric Hoiness is #1 in points for Nipawin against the North Stars with six (2G-4A) in three games. 

With the Flin Flon Bombers out of action tonight, a North Stars win would put them five points behind the Bombers for first place in the SJHL. A Hawks victory would put them in third place in the SJHL. 

A regulation win for Nipawin would bring them within a point of the North Stars for second place, while an overtime or shootout victory would put them two points back.
