The Kings Energy Group Outdoor Rink at the Cenovus Energy Hub officially opened over the weekend, welcoming local youth onto the ice for the first time with a friendly game of shinny.

Players from the U13AAA Lancers and other local hockey teams took part in a “sticks in the middle” matchup on Saturday, marking what organizers described as a new milestone for outdoor recreation in the Lloydminster community.

The opening focused on bringing neighbours together, with Kings Energy Group saying the rink is intended to support “ice time for all” and provide a space that encourages outdoor activity throughout the winter season.

“The Kings Energy Group Outdoor Rink is a great example of how sport connects our community,” Mayor Gerald Aalbers said in a statement.

“Whether it’s a quick game after school or an evening on the ice with friends and family, this gives everyone a place to stay active and enjoy the season.”

Kings Energy Group President Darren King said outdoor hockey holds a special place for many families and communities.

“Outdoor hockey is a sport we all grew up with; crisp winter air and the simple joy of gathering on the ice,” King said, adding that spaces like the new rink are where children learn to skate, neighbours connect, and winter memories are created.

The outdoor rink will remain open for the season, weather permitting, and includes lighting for evening use. Information on open hours is available through the City of Lloydminster’s arenas webpage.
