‘You can end our suffering’: grieving daughter makes plea to mother’s killer to come forward

Seven years after the murder of her mother, Amanda Wolfe is still searching for closure.

The person or persons responsible for the death of Joanne Wolfe-Lafond on Jan. 13, 2019 at Muskeg Lake Cree Nation have not been found. The 56-year-old mother of two, was stabbed multiple times and found outside her home.

Investigators informed Amanda her mother struggled and she said she believes her mother attempted to go for help.

“It sounds like my mom because she wasn’t the type of person to just take anything. She was a fighter all her life. She was a residential school survivor,” she said.

EMS personnel were already present when officers arrived around 12:50 p.m. Lafond was pronounced deceased at the scene. Amanda said her mother loved to play slots and the previous night, along with Amanda’s biological father, aunt and her aunt’s husband, went to the bar in Marcelin.

As far as Amanda knows, her mother was alone when the violent altercation occurred.

“Someone showed up either on foot or like, pulled up. I don’t know like that’s the thing we didn’t believe in cameras because nothing like this ever happened.”

Amanda, who now lives in her mother’s home, explained that because they live right off the main road, it’s not uncommon for strangers to stop after their vehicles have broken down. Also nor far from her mind is the possibility the killer may be someone who lives in the community and is someone she knows.

“I try not to wrap my mind around it because the possibilities are endless,” she said.

Acknowledging the pain that comes with birthday and holiday traditions when families typically gather, Amanda confirmed her mother’s death has taken a toll on her mental health.

Her only comfort from police is that the investigation remains ongoing. While she has made a promise to herself to never stop fighting, she’s also hoping the killer comes forward.

“Redeem yourself because there’s no harm in that,” she said. “You don’t know the power you’re holding over this family. The weight of what you’re holding. You can end our suffering.”

According to information shared by RCMP on Wednesday, the Historical Case Unit, part of the Major Crimes Branch, continues to investigate the death of Joanne Wolfe-Lafond.

“Though we don’t have new details to share about this investigation at this time, police are actively following up on tips received. Investigation to date does not indicate a robbery occurred,” they said.
