Yellow wind warning issued for central, southern Saskatchewan

Jan 14, 2026 | 4:03 PM

The Humboldt and North Battleford areas are under a wind warning.

The yellow warning encompasses much of central and southern Saskatchewan, as a system moves through the province on Thursday.

Christy Climenhaga, scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, told northeastNOW the system is coming from the northwest, bringing with it some very windy conditions, with some snow and blowing snow also possible.

She said temperatures will also dip significantly as the system makes its way through the province, but the major story will be the significant wind.

Central and southern regions are “where we’re going to be seeing more of those potentially severe gusts, anywhere up to 100 km/h possible, even more widespread in that 70 to 90 km/h range possible.”

The wind and snow could also cause significant issues on highways in affected areas. The last few days have been warm, and melting has taken place on roads, but Climenhaga said that cooler temperatures and strong wind could make surfaces slick.

“You can probably expect some ice out there, and with the windy weather it could make for some rough driving.”

She said that’s something to keep in mind if you have travel plans in the affected areas, especially Thursday night.

Despite not being part of the warning, areas like Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin, Prince Albert, and La Ronge could see gusts upwards of 60 to 70 km/h.

Temperatures will also be significantly colder late Thursday into the weekend across the province.
