City takes action as rising coyote activity at North Battleford landfill sparks safety concerns

An increase in coyote activity at North Battleford’s landfill has prompted the city to take action amid growing public safety concerns.

Recently, residents in the city have noticed coyotes migrating to and forming packs at the Waste Management Facility (WMF).

The city’s Public and Intergovernmental Relations Coordinator said this increase has raised public safety concerns for customers and staff.

“The wildlife population within the WMF grounds is the highest it has been in recent years and moreover, the coyotes are exhibiting bold behavior, including directly approaching people at the facility, thereby posing a serious risk to personal safety,” said Candace Toma in a statement sent to battlefordsNOW.

In response, the City of North Battleford has notified affected property owners that trapping activities will be conducted on city property as part of an effort to manage the local coyote population.

“A similar threat occurred a number of years ago when the coyote population was also very high. That situation was addressed in a similar manner by the city at that time,” said Toma.

Addressing this wildlife threat is an important part of the Waste Management Facility’s Operations Plan, approved by the provincial Ministry of Environment.
