Klippenstein scores winner, North Stars win 3-2 over Weyburn in the longest shootout in SJHL history
It took a 21-round shootout, but the Battlefords North Stars (20-8-2-2, 1st in Nutrien Division) took down the Weyburn Red Wings (21-10-1-2, 1st in Bunge Division) 3-2 and won their fifth straight game. Making his North Stars debut, goaltender Spencer Michnik stopped 39 shots in 65 minutes of play and added 20 saves in the shootout in the win.
“It was extraordinary… You look around the rink, everyone is on the edge of their seats. Our guys were dialed in,” said North Stars assistant coach Owen Lamb postgame. “You had guys trying to come up with different moves to maybe try. It was just a really, really cool experience that rarely ever happens so awesome just to be a part of that.”
Red Wings captain Lucas Schmid opened the scoring on the powerplay with a one-timer late in the man advantage. Later, Anthony Campbell brought the puck into the zone before firing it past Red Wings goaltender Nate Stevens to tie the game up. The goal was assisted by Josh Knittig, who extended his league leading assist and point streak to nine games.
In the second period, Schmid scored his second goal in the game to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead. Owen Nelson tied the game late in the frame with a goal in his third straight game.
