North Stars aiming for third straight win hosting the Nipawin Hawks

Jan 6, 2026 | 11:47 AM

After a pair of wins against the Kindersley Klippers on New Years Eve and New Years Day, the Battlefords North Stars (17-8-2-2, first in Nutrien Division) look to keep it going when they host the Nipawin Hawks (20-10-1-0, 2nd in UPL Division).

The North Stars and Hawks have played a pair of games against each other this season. The Hawks got the better of the North Stars the first time they played each other, winning 7-6 in overtime in North Battleford on Nov. 4, 2025, when Clayton Nesbitt had the game winner. The North Stars took down the Hawks 4-1 in Nipawin on Nov. 15. In that game, North Stars goaltender Kaeden Serpa had 43 saves on 44 shots.

With some players returning to the lineup, the North Stars lineup will look quite different than it did in their last couple of games against the Klippers. Battlefords will be getting back their captain and leading point getter Anthony Campbell, as well as leading scorer on defence Gavin Granger who have both returned from the Viking Cup where they won the gold medal with team SJHL.

Josh Knittig will also be returning from injury for the North Stars after missing three games. Knittig, Campbell and Granger returning to the lineup means the North Stars will be getting back their top three scorers. Campbell has 27 points (8g-19a) in 27 games, Knittig has 26 points (8g-18a) in 26 games and Granger has 25 points (5g-20a) in 27 games this season.

A new defenceman will also be making his debut for the North Stars, 6’7 defenceman Alex Coventry is playing his first game in a North Stars uniform after being acquired by the team this past weekend.

The North Stars did well in the recent SJHL weekly and monthly awards. Finlay Klippenstein won the rookie of the month with eight points (6g-2a) in his last six games.

The Hawks are 6-4 in their last 10 games, while the North Stars are 7-3. With a win, the North Stars would overtake the Estevan Bruins and move into fourth place in the SJHL. The Ultra Print pregame show begins at 7 p.m. Saskatchewan time, while Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey begins at 7:30 p.m. on CJNB/CJNS.
