Police continue presence on Big Island Lake Cree Nation, work to identify and arrest suspects

Jan 6, 2026 | 10:21 AM

The police investigation into a shooting and subsequent dangerous persons alert on the Big Island Lake Cree Nation continues.

While investigators search for suspects, they’re also working to determine whether two incidents are connected: A shooting on Dec. 30 that left one person dead, and a firearm discharge that happened three days later.

The Jan. 2 firearm discharge is being investigated by members of the RCMP’s North Battlefords Provincial General Investigation Section. So far, Mounties have found bullet strikes in multiple residences in the community. No injuries have been reported.

The RCMP is urging anyone with information about either incident to report it to police immediately by calling 310-RCMP. Information can be submitted anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or online at www.saskcrimestoppers.com.

“If you saw something, say something,” said Insp. Ashley St. Germaine, the senior investigator with the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Major Crimes Branch.

“While investigators continue to collect and analyze evidence, including video surveillance, eyewitness accounts will be key to providing answers to the victims and their families.”

The Dec. 30 shooting killed a 31-year-old man and injured three others who remain in hospital. Police said they are unable to provide an update on the injured parties due to the Privacy Act.

The incident prompted a dangerous persons alert, which was rescinded several hours later. If imminent risk to public safety happens, police said they will notify the public.

Residents of the Big Island Lake Cree Nation will notice an ongoing police presence in the community as officers continue to investigate and try to locate the suspects. Multiple RCMP officers from across Saskatchewan are involved in the file and are providing additional patrols. This includes members from Pierceland RCMP, North Battleford and Prince Albert Provincial GIS, North Battleford Crime Reduction Team, Meadow Lake Crime Reduction Team, Traffic Services and the Historical Case Unit.
