A $60M upgrade is underway at SaskEnergy’s Unity compressor station

Dec 29, 2025 | 5:13 PM

SaskEnergy is investing $60 million to modernize its Unity Compressor Station, replacing aging infrastructure in a project aimed at improving reliability, safety and long-term system performance across western Saskatchewan.

The station, which marks its 65th anniversary this year, is receiving four new high-efficiency compressor units, upgraded monitoring and safety systems, and an expanded facility footprint.

SaskEnergy says the investment comes as the existing equipment reaches the end of its lifecycle, and is part of broader work to strengthen the provincial natural gas network.

The Unity facility plays a significant role in the province’s energy system, moving about 230 terajoules of natural gas daily — roughly the amount Regina and Saskatoon would use on a -20 C day.

“By upgrading aging assets and installing advanced equipment, SaskEnergy is ensuring our system can meet current and future demand, support economic growth, and maintain high standards of reliability and safety,” the cooperation noted.

About 16 SaskEnergy employees operate out of Unity, and the project is also expected to involve Saskatchewan-based suppliers and vendors, supporting local economic development.

“There will be no impact on natural gas service to Unity and area residents during the process.”

Planning began in 2023, with site preparation starting in summer 2025. Installation of the new compressor units is expected to begin in early 2026, with completion planned for November of that year.

The corporation invested $176 million in growth and expansion projects in 2024–25 and committed another $132 million to capital improvements, supporting what it says is 99.99 per cent system reliability province-wide.
