BUFC finishes 2025 with medals in multiple indoor tournaments

As the calendar year wraps up, so does the Battlefords United Football Club’s (BUFC) Battlefords Youth Soccer Inc. (BYSI) season. The competitive season will continue into the new year.

Club director Kat Huxley said athletes in the U5 to U13 age groups just finished 10 weeks of play.

“Everything’s going fantastic. So our athletes will receive a ball, a medal and some treats at the end of their sessions this week. Which is super fun for them, then they can finish off and enjoy the Christmas break.”

In the competitive stream, the club sent teams to tournaments in Saskatoon, Martensville, and Prince Albert.

Near the end of November at the Hollandia Off the Wall tournament in Saskatoon, the club took home three medals. The U15 girls division 3 team won the gold medal with a 5-4 victory in the finals over the host Hollandia. The U13 girls division 2 squad also won the gold, winning the final match 5-2 over SUSC Everton. The only BUFC boys team to medal was the U17/U19 squad, who fell 3-0 in the finals to Hollandia and took home the silver medal.

The team got the most medals in the Valley United Cup in early December, hosted by the Valley United Soccer Club in Martensville. They got six medals in total, with gold medals from the U13 and U15 girls teams. Huxley thinks the U15 girls have improved the most out of any team in the club this season.

“They have medaled in the last two tournaments that they’ve been in. In the last tournament in the Valley United Cup, they were losing in the finals, and they worked very hard to come back and win that game,” said Huxley.

The club also got silver medals from the U13, U15 and U17 boys as well as the U17 girls.

Huxley said the club’s philosophy and vision is to be a team that can play ‘out of the back with the ball when our keeper has the ball.’

“So, building those skills, confidence on the ball, being able to 1v1 with confidence against other teams and make quick and smart decisions.”

As well as travelling for some tournaments, BUFC hosted their Futsal Club day recently, hosting teams from Saskatoon and Humboldt. Futsal is a fast-paced, FIFA-recognized indoor version of football played on a court with five players per side, including a goalkeeper.

“It was a bunch of exhibition games, so it works out really well. We had Sask Soccer come down and work with our futsal referees, which is new to us. Having futsal trained referees in our club, and being able to ref those games, so that was great,” said Huxley.

In late January, BUFC will be hosting the Little Legends Cup which is the provinces newest U9 and U11 tournament. They will also host Futsal Provincials in late February at the NationsWEST Fieldhouse and John Paul II Collegiate.
