RCMP recruitment initiative: Run with a Recruiter

Individuals who are considering a career with the RCMP can join a Run with a Recruiter event Wednesday night in North Battleford.

The night will be hosted as a fitness event to help applicants prepare for the RCMP Academy, Depot Division. Participating in the activities will give individuals an idea of whether they are physically ready for the program or if more training is needed.

Cpl. Kim Gobeil said the event initially started to attempt a more hands-on approach to mentoring RCMP applicants.

“Our process can be very long and sometimes it’s hard to get ahold of somebody in the process. So, we’ve made ourselves available and we want to put ourselves out there to the applicants to answer any questions and to make them as prepared as possible for training at depot,” he said.

Gobeil explained when individuals show up to training camp, they must be in good physical shape. Currently the standard is to be able to run 5 km in 30 minutes.

“It’s not a fitness camp or boot camp where they’re going to get in shape. It’s something that they have to show up in shape for,” he said.

In the past, the RCMP recruiters have seen a positive reaction from people who have attended the event. Usually, individuals leave with more information on what they need to work on while awaiting the application process.

“Some people need to work on fitness, some people need to work on their cardio, some people just need to work on some strength training,” Gobeil said.

Due to the recent shortage in officers, these recruitment efforts help to give potential applicants the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about what a career looks like as an officer.

“We usually have a group that are maybe interested in joining and haven’t joined yet, and then we do have active applicants who are currently in the process and just kind of want to see where they’re at with their fitness.”

“Come out, try it. We’re there to assist and mentor,” Gobeil said.
