Rangers say Canadian Derek Cornelius will see a specialist over muscle injury

GLASGOW — There could be more bad injury news for Canada coach Jesse Marsch.

Glasgow Rangers coach Danny Röhl says Canadian centre back Derek Cornelius is going to see a specialist about a muscle injury.

The German coach said before Rangers’ 2-1 win over Livingston in Scottish Premier League play Sunday that the injury could be significant.

Cornelius had to come off in the 33rd minute of Canada’s 2-0 win over Venezuela in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday.

He did not see action in Canada’s scoreless draw with Ecuador on Nov. 13 in Toronto because he had been carrying a knock.

The 27-year-old from Ajax, Ont., is the fourth starter in the Canadian backline to be hit by injury.

Celtic fullback Alistair Johnston is recovering from hamstring surgery while centre back Moise Bombito fractured his left tibia playing for OGC Nice in French Ligue 1 action in late October. Captain/fullback Alphonso Davies has just returned to training with Bayern Munich after being sidelined by surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament.

Marsch has used Luc de Fougerolles, Joel Waterman, Kamal Miller and Alfie Price at centre back in recent games with Niko Sigur and Richie Laryea at fullback.

On the plus side, Canada has conceded just one goal in its last six matches (3-1-2).

The next FIFA international window in March 23-31, ahead of the June 11 start of the 2026 World Cup. Marsch has said he wants to hold a January camp for select players.
