For the third time in four years, the Battlefords Barons U18A hockey team has won their home tournament after taking down the Saskatoon Aces 5-4 in the finals.

In the first game, the Barons played against the Saskatoon Flyers who they had previously played in an exhibition game. Barons head coach Chad Olsen described the Flyers as a “really strong team”, but the Barons were able to get a 7-2 win. “A nice confidence builder for the guys’ first game in our home tournament,” said Olsen.

In the second game, the Barons faced the Saskatoon Senators. In a back-and-forth contest which ended in a 10-8 win for the Barons. The Barons third and final game of the round robin was a 6-4 win over Prince Albert.

“Their goaltending was phenomenal, and the boys peppered them but came out with the victory,” said Olsen.

The Barons beat the Aces 5-4 in the final, but it didn’t come without a comeback attempt by Saskatoon.

“[We] took the early lead, 5-0 after the first and then kind of went into defensive mode, and they came back and made it 5-3 after two. Scored one more in the third to make it 5-4, and that’s how it ended,” said Olsen.

“It was a team effort and the boys battled hard, and it showed at the end of the game there when they celebrated.”

Olsen pointed out how happy he was for the team to win in their home city. “Very rewarding to these young men when they win in their home tournament.”

The round robin was held at Red Pheasant Cree Nation, for which tournament chair Jennifer Whyte had high praise.

“I’ve attended a lot of tournaments over the years and have been on tournament committees but have never experienced the level of hospitality that we experienced this past weekend with the Red Pheasant Cree Nation Arena staff. The staff were on hand with whatever we needed, the announcer was incredible and entertaining, the canteen was one of the best I’ve been to, and we couldn’t have asked for a better host facility,” said Whyte.

Olsen added that point. “They treated us well out there and were always accommodating and helpful whenever needed…Red Pheasant hosting us for the two days was greatly appreciated by all.”

The Barons season in the Tri-City Hockey League started early in November. The team is 1-1 in regular season play thus far and have five tournaments left throughout the season.
