Alzheimer’s Walk a great cause for community

May 27, 2019 | 5:00 PM

The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s is taking place Sunday, June 2, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Beginning with registration at Lawrence Elementary School at 1 p.m., the walk will begin at 1:30 p.m. after a short opening ceremony.

Angela Hodel, events coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan, organized the walk. Hodel said with over 19,000 people currently in Saskatchewan suffering with Alzheimer’s disease, or related dementia, it’s something that “hits home for everyone,” making the walk an important cause throughout the province.

An average of between 75 and 100 people have taken part in the Battlefords’ Walk for Alzheimer’s over the last number of years, with the event raising over $7,000 last year alone.

Hodel said she expects similar support once again this time around as the goal of the province’s Alzheimer’s Society is around the $8,000 mark. Hodel believes the goal is certainly attainable judging by the past support for the cause shown within the Battlefords community.

“The North Battleford community has always been really supportive of our cause,” Hodel said. “So we enjoy hosting annual events there each year.”

All proceeds raised from the Walk for Alzheimer’s will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan. From there, funds go toward supporting people afflicted with the disease throughout the province with various programs and services, and research about the disease.

“It’s just a great event to kind of kick off the spring and give back to your community,” Hodel said. “I invite everyone to come out with their families.”
