Mounties, social agencies team up to tackle downtown safety in North Battleford

A new initiative to improve safety in downtown North Battleford will see Mounties teaming up with social agencies and Community Safety Officers for specialized patrols.

“We are very aware that the concerns raised about the safety in the downtown area are complex and require a multi-agency approach,” said Battlefords RCMP Detachment Commander Inspector Ryan How in a statement.

The plan, announced Wednesday during the State of the City event by Mayor Kelli Hawtin and How, will take a multi-agency approach to address concerns about safety in the area.

During the announcement, Hawtin stated that the program will add three officers to focus on the downtown core.

“The goal is to create an environment where everyone feels safe shopping, walking, working, investing, and banking,” Hawtin said during the event.

The initiative will also include health professionals, community leaders, and cultural representatives in the on-foot patrols.

Their role will also be to connect individuals struggling with addictions and health issues to the appropriate services.

Alongside the patrols, the RCMP will also work directly with business owners to implement the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) model, which focuses on improving safety through urban design and property management.
