Beavers set to open season tonight in Edam

After a tough end to the 2018-19 season, the North Battleford Beavers are ready to turn the page and get on the field.

The team begins its run tonight when they take the road to battle with the Edam Blue Sox. The Beavers described this year as one that may see a step back after losing a few key pieces. But after seeing how the team has gelled early on, they believe they’re ready to surprise a few people with some young additions to the roster.

Coach and player Kyle Gregoire laid out his expectations for the season, which is all about competing deep into the playoffs and provincials.

“Looking at the young guys that we have and (our veterans) that we have established, I’m hoping that we can compete,” he said.

One thing that may help the Beavers is their schedule. With the North Battleford Midgets coming into the fold, along with the Trappers, a large majority of the team’s games are at home. Out of the 13 games they will play, eight will be at Beaver Lions Stadium. They may not be the home team for every single game while at Beaver Lions, but its familiar territory, Gregoire said.

“I think we’re just comfortable at our own ballpark,” he said. “I think it helps us [knowing the field]. I think it’s a positive to have that on [our schedule].”

The first pitch tonight in Edam will be at 7:30 p.m., and the Beavers will play their first of eight games at home tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. against the Macklin Lakers (0-2). You can see the team’s full schedule here.
