North Stars come up short against Terriers

Feb 9, 2025 | 1:56 AM

Last night, the Battlefords North Stars were at the Westland Arena in Yorkton and after a tough fought game, ended up falling short 4-2 against the Yorkton Terriers in their fourth and final matchup of the season.

For the first, the North Stars had a hard time getting things going offensively as they got outshot 11-3 and it was the Terriers who scored the lone goal of the period to take a 1-0 lead going into the intermission.

Coming out for the second, Battlefords gained some momentum as they killed off three penalties to keep it at a one goal game. Following that, the North Stars then had their chance on the man advantage for the first time in the contest but after a defensive breakdown, the Terriers got a shorthanded breakaway and scored again to make it 2-0.

As the period went on, the North Stars slowly started to get some more chances and put pressure on the Terriers. Then in the final two minutes of the second, Battlefords got back-to-back goals, one coming from Anthony Campbell on the powerplay and the other from Nikita Ivashchenko to tie the game 2-2 going into the third.

For the third period, the North Stars really started to find their groove, putting together rush after rush but even then, still couldn’t find the back of the net. After 16 minutes of the third had gone by, it was the Terriers who finally scored to break the tie on a shot right off the draw in the Battlefords zone to take a 3-2 lead.

Despite holding Yorkton to only five shots in the third, Battlefords wasn’t able to get the equalizer and the Terriers scored one more on an empty netter to win the game 4-2.

The North Stars and Terriers both had 25 shots on goal with Battlefords going 1/5 on the powerplay while stopping Yorkton all seven times on the penalty kill.

Justen Maric stopped 21/24 shots and made some big saves in the first two periods to keep the North Stars in the game.

Battlefords record now sits at 22-18-3-2 on the season for 49 points, putting them at 7th overall in the league.

The North Stars next game is Friday, Feb. 14 as they host the Humboldt Broncos at the Access Communications Centre with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
