Two of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ key defenders will be back in 2025.

The CFL club announced linebacker Jameer Thurman and defensive end Malik Carney have signed extensions.

Thurman’s deal is for two years after an outstanding season as the team’s middle linebacker.

He was named a West All-CFLer after appearing in 17 regular season games for the Roughriders, registering 76 defensive tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

Thurman joined the Roughriders in free agency last offseason after a year with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. That season, he had 98 defensive tackles and five sacks, while also adding two interceptions.

Prior to signing with the Ti-Cats, Thurman played four seasons (2017-18, 2021-22) with the Calgary Stampeders.

Carney, also known as “Scoop”, has agreed to a contract extension with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The CFL defensive end suited up for 13 games with the club in 2024, registering 26 defensive tackles and four sacks. He also appeared in both playoff games for the Riders, with the defensive end adding six tackles and one sack in the postseason.

Prior to coming to Saskatchewan, the Alexandria, Va. product spent three seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Over 41 games there, he registered 81 career tackles, five special teams tackles, 13 sacks, one interception and two forced fumbles.

He was set to become a free agent on Feb. 11.
