Jan 10, 2025 | 4:00 PM

After having a great start to the season, the Battlefords United Football Club (BUFC) has a big weekend ahead as they have five teams heading to Saskatoon today for the East Side Tournament of Champions.

This is the first time in a few years that East Side has held this tournament, and the BUFC is expecting to continue their success with a good result this weekend.

“We’re all generally in the divisions that we belong in. So, we expect to come out on top or be in the finals across the board.” said Kat Huxley, Technical Director of the BUFC.

The tournament kicked off today at 11:45 a.m. with the U15 girls winning 2-0.

On top of having their first tournament of the New Year, the team will also be hosting a U11 club days this weekend, where they will be inviting teams from Saskatoon and Warman to come and compete.

“This weekend we’re hosting club days in North Battleford at the Field House. It’s more like exhibition games so it gives us the opportunity to play more games because the kids generally play in tournaments, so it just gives them the opportunity to play more games against teams that they would normally play.”

Looking back to the beginning of the season, the BUFC has seen lots of progress across all of their teams and now in the new year, their hope to increase their competitiveness and push their players to the next level.

“We were all extremely excited about how well our teams came together quickly, how well we made changes, how well our team progressed in such a fast matter to really showcase on top consistently at the start of our season. We have a tournament coming up at the end of the month where we have a lot of teams moving up a division and really push our competitive level and push our athletes, to get them to the next level.”

The next game for the East Side Tournament is tonight at 7:00 p.m. when the U15 Bull Team takes on Aurora Mirage.

The first game for this weekend’s club days is Saturday, Jan. 11 when U11 Team Nguyen plays Astra from Saskatoon.
