Snow, wind and extreme cold coming to the Battlefords

Brace yourselves Battlefords, Jack Frost is coming back for another round.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, the community is on the outer track of a weather system that will bring about 5 to 10 cm of snow and wind Wednesday morning.

“With these systems, any slight track a little bit further north or south could make a huge difference between those amounts,” said Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins.

“The models have been pretty consistent with placing those heavier amounts south.”

Regardless of the smaller amounts of the white stuff, Desjardins said residents need to be prepared for the wind and cold that’s to come after the system peters out Thursday morning.

“If you can delay travel tomorrow and into Thursday morning especially, it looks like snow is going to be piling up quite quickly on roadways and highways,” she said.

“If you do have to get out there, give yourselves a lot of extra time to get to where you need to be – we’re expecting traffic to be quite slow.”

According to the forecast, while it is currently sunny, the meteorologist said they were expecting strong easterly winds for the area. Temperatures are expected to fall to – 24 C this afternoon with the windchill pushing it down to –34 C. The area is also under an extreme cold warning with windchill plummeting temperatures down to –45 C overnight.

Tomorrow, the wind will kick in.

“So, gusting up to 60 (km/h) in ahead of the system and swinging around to the northwest,” said Desjardins.

“You could see reduced visibility and blowing snow as well so that’s going to make for pretty poor travel conditions.”

Once the weather does taper, the cold will set in with another push of arctic air in the province. As such, the forecasts expect –20s to –30s C Thursday night into Friday, with the windchill, it could once again get down to –45 C.

“I guess the good thing about that is it’s relatively short lived. We’re expecting temperatures to rebound to near normal or just slightly above normal for the weekend,” Desjardins said of the comparatively balmy weather that will hang around till Christmas.
