The John Paul II Collegiate(JPII) Crusaders Senior Boys basketball team hosted their home tournament this past weekend and after making it all the way to the finals, fell short against the North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) Vikings, giving them their first tournament win of the season.

JPII tipped off their weekend on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in front of the whole school as they took on Warman. The Crusaders played well and won big with a score of 103-49 against to advance to the next round. In the second round, the Crusaders played against Evan Hardy and continued with their success. The team shot efficiently from three and ended up scoring a massive 106 points to take the win and advance to the finals.

For NBCHS, they started off the tournament against Humboldt where they dominated 79 to 57 to move onto the semis. In the semis, they took on Melfort and yet again proved to be the stronger team, winning 81 to 62 to advance to the finals and take on JPII.

For the finals between the Crusaders and Vikings, it was a tight game for most of the match. But as the game was nearing the end it was NBCHS who started to pull away and began to lock down JPII. Eventually, the Vikings were able to grab a good lead and hold onto it to end up winning the game 74-57.

“It was good weekend for us and we got our first tournament win of the year, so that was awesome. That was our third tournament as we started the year in Regina at O’Neill and we played there and took home silver. Then our second weekend, we were at PA Carlton and ended up finishing fourth out of the 16 teams, we didn’t get any medals but it was still a pretty successful weekend. We’re pretty happy with where we started, we’re7-3 so it’s been a good start for sure.” said NBCHS Sr. Boys Basketball Head Coach, Ryley Woiden.

Even though they didn’t win the tournament, JPII was satisfied with the result and happy to have their school there supporting them.

“On Friday we got lots of support as we played in front of a nice crowd and we expected to be competing for a spot in the finals. We we’re playing really good basketball this weekend and then in our final game we slowed down a little bit. Overall it was a really good weekend of basketball for our boys.” said Cooper Olson, Head Coach of the JPII Sr. Boys Basketball team.

Now coming up for this weekend, both teams will be going their separate way as JPII will be heading to a tournament in Humboldt.

And NBCHS will make their way to Saskatoon where they will play in the C4 Classic at Centennial Collegiate, which is a fundraiser tournament for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.
