Battlefords look to end Bombers streak, Grill and Campbell get weekly awards

The Battlefords North Stars held onto their second-place spot in the standings after getting three out of four points this past weekend against the Weyburn Red Wings.

Now boasting a 14-7-3-2 record for 33 points on the season, the North Stars look ahead to this Friday, Dec. 13th and Saturday, Dec. 14 as they take on longtime rivals, the Flin Flon Bombers for the first time this season at the Access Communications Centre.

Currently on a nine-game win streak, the Bombers sit tied for third in the league with a 15-9-1 record and are only two points behind the North Stars with 31.

With Christmas break just around the corner and only six points separating Battlefords from being out of the playoffs, this weekend will be another important one for the North Stars as they will need to try and separate themselves from the middle pack of teams.

Looking at Flin Flon, they had a bit of a rocky start to the season but have really picked up their play as of recently and have made some huge additions to their squad as well. Over the past month, the Bombers have acquired three former CHL players in forward Leighton Carruthers, defenceman Kyle Marsden, and goalie Matthew Kieper, all of whom have had a big impact on their success.

Apart from their new additions, the Bombers also have a strong group of scoring forwards with Ryder Ringor, Koen Senft and Keefe Gruener, who are all able to score on any given night. Then on the defensive end, they have veterans like Cole Tanchuk and Luke Lepper holding down the blueline.

Fortunately for the North Stars, with the World Junior A Challenge currently going on in Camrose, Alberta, the Bombers will see themselves without Senft and Lepper, as well as their Head Coach and 2024 CJHL Coach of the Year, Mike Reagan.

For the North Stars, they will need to see another big weekend out of their leading goal scorers Nikita Ivashchenko, Anthony Campbell and Elijah Anderson as it seems whenever those guys are able to find the back of the net, the team usually end up in the win column. Campbell was also named the SJHL Forward of the Week, grabbing six points (four goals, two assists) in three games this past week.

Defensively, it’s going to be Jordan Grill, Gavin Granger and Linken Fischer that the North Stars will rely on to protect their zone. These three have been playing great as of recently and as long as they continue to do what they have been, the team will be in good hands. Grill was also given a weekly honour for his performance this past week, getting named the SJHL Defensemen of the Week, tallying seven points (one goal, six assists) in three games, including a five point night against Weyburn on Saturday.

When it comes to goaltending, the North Stars should have nothing to worry about as whether it’s Justen Maric or Connor Baumbach in between the pipes, both have been able to hold it down and play solid.

Puck drop for the games this Friday and Saturday is at 7:30 p.m. at the Access Communication Centre. On Friday night, it’s the teams ‘Hockey Fights Cancer’ night and they will have posters available for sale with all funds going to the Canadian Cancer Society. Then on Saturday night, it’s agriculture appreciation night and the North Stars will be doing a teddy bear toss after the team scores their first goal.

If you can’t make it to the games, you can still tune into all the action with the Napa Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast on CJNB/CJNS. Ultra Print pregame show starts at 7:00 p.m. for both nights.
