North Battleford councillor MacAngus faces criminal charges

UPDATE: The RCMP have confirmed that Ross MacAngus is charged with sexual assault. The incident was reported in September of this year.

The Town of Battleford confirmed late this afternoon that MacAngus resigned from his job as Community Safety Officer.

The Town is now looking for an interim Public Safety Officer, following the retirement of Ross MacAngus, who retired effective five days ago. His charges were laid on Nov. 26.

While the town looks to fill the position, that includes public education on bylaws, working with community residents and making the community a safe and healthy place to be, residents with urgent issues are asked to email: cao@battleford.ca or for everyday bylaw or safety information: publicsafetyofficer@battleford.ca.

In a news release issued by Mayor Kelli Hawtin and Dr. Randy Patrick, city manager, the organization stated that according to the Cities Act, that does not automatically disqualify MacAngus from being on council.

He would be disqualified if he is convicted and the offence is punishable by five years or more in jail.

“However, unless and until there is a criminal conviction, there is no basis to remove the Council member from his elected seat on Council,” said the release.

Hawtin and Patrick said that the City will not be commenting further at this time.

The statement does not specify what the charge is but since criminal charges are generally public, more details will be available later.
