On Air for Health Care raises over $551K for Mammography equipment

After 12 hours of residents ringing phones, making online donations and stopping by the Battlefords Union Hospital, the 2019 BUH Foundation On Air for Health Care radiothon has raised over $551,00,

The record breaking amount pushed the fundraiser past its goal of half-a-million dollars for new Mammography equipment at the hospital.

With early detection, survival rates increase dramatically, and with this new equipment, the hospital will be able to catch breast cancer up to three years before it can be detected through traditional examination. Mammography is the gold standard for screening against breast cancer and can help save lives.

The current device is over ten years old, and while it still meets specifications, advancements in both hardware and software have it falling behind, according to Medical Imaging Manager Colais Fransoo.

“The generous support from the people of northwestern Saskatchewan is inspiring,” CJNB’s Grant Shutte said, who spent all day on air.

Q98’s Nic Fransoo said the record breaking milestone was “unbelievable.”

“It is heartwarming to see how much the community and those from the surrounding area and even outside of Saskatchewan are willing to step up and support women’s health in the Battlefords,” he said.

Last year, the radiothon contributed greatly to the $216,000 price tag to purchase a new central cardiac telemetry system to provide an up-to-date heart monitoring system within the BUH. In 2017, the community came together to raise funds for new ear, nose and throat surgical equipment, which had a campaign goal $380,000.
