It’s time for the On Air for Health Care radiothon

May 10, 2019 | 8:58 AM

Pick up the phone, head to the website or stop by the Battlefords Union Hospital to help the On Air For Health Care Radiothon reach it’s goal of $500,000 for a new Mammography equipment.

With early detection, survival rates increase dramatically, and with this equipment, we will be able to catch breast cancer up to three years before it can be detected through traditional breast examination. Mammography is the gold standard for screening against breast cancer and can help save lives.

The current device is over ten years old, and while it still meets specifications, advancements in both hardware and software have it falling behind, according to Medical Imaging Manager Colais Fransoo.

“As the advancements are growing in the larger communities, we can capture the images here and we can share them, but knowing they are one step ahead of us, we don’t want that,” she said.

Last year, the radiothon contributed greatly to the $216,000 price tag to purchase a new central cardiac telemetry system to provide an up-to-date heart monitoring system within the BUH. In 2017, the community came together to raise funds for new ear, nose and throat surgical equipment, which had a campaign goal $380,000.

The campaign runs until 6 p.m. and those wanting to donate can call 306-446-6652, stop by the hospital or head over to buhfoundation.com.
