Three judo athletes from the Battlefords Judo Club were in Winnipeg this past weekend for the Manitoba Open Judo competition. Ridley Suberlak, Silvan Raess and Corsin Raess all took part in the event and not only that, placed near the top in their division.

Ridley was in U18 Male +90Kg Division and got second overall, Silvan was in the U14 Male Advanced –35Kg Division and grabbed the silver medal and Corsin was in the U16 Male Advanced Division and placed fifth overall.

Coach and head instructor at Battlefords Judo Club, Curtis Suberlak was very impressed with the athletes and said it was a great weekend for development.

“Silvan had nice gains, he went one win with two losses and ended up with a silver medal, which is very good. Corsin had one win and two losses as well to be in fifth place, which is a nice gain for him. Ridley had one competitor in his division and was ahead in his first match and fought incredibly good but couldn’t take the win, so he got second. Overall, it was extremely good performances by all three of them and great development, so we’re very, very happy.”

The Judo Club has seen success so far this year as this isn’t the only tournament that they have done well in. Last weekend, Ridley was also at the Ontario Open Judo competition and got the bronze medal there as well.

But since COVID-19, getting back into the competition form has also been a little difficult for the club. So just getting the opportunity to attend these tournaments is a big step in the right direction, Suberlak said.

“We’ve been on a rebuild stage since COVID. So, it’s nice to get our athletes back into it from a provincial standpoint. It was a national level event and just having three athletes even go is nice. You can never be quite certain who the competition is going to be, and the boys have been training very, very hard for the last couple of years. We are never certain they’ll be medals coming through, but you know the effort was good, their form looked excellent in their fights. We’re all super proud of them.”

The next big competition for the club is the Quebec Open and they will be represented by Ridley, who was selected to attend. Then following that he will also be attending a national training camp as well.

“Ridley was selected to attend the Quebec Open, so he’ll be traveling with the provincial team for the Quebec open, followed by a three-day national training camp and then the Canada Cup, which is an International Judo Foundation event. This is pretty major for him to fight on that level. Our expectation for him is that he’s going to have a lot of hard work on his hands depending on who he’s fighting but the experience itself will be something,” Suberlak added.

Corsin and Silvan also have provincial level events coming up too. On Nov. 23, they will travel to Watrous for the Watrous Ju-No-Ri Provincial Judo Tournament. Then in January, they will go to Regina for the Sask Open Judo Tournament.
