The Battlefords Volleyball Club had a successful showing at provincials this past weekend.

The 15U Storm women’s team took home gold in Division 3 over Estevan, while the 17U Impact squad earned a bronze medal. The provincials were held in Saskatoon and Warman. Coach of the 15U Storm, Ames Leslie, said it was a championship in which the team had ups and downs, but ended up coming out on top. They lost the first game in the tournament and then went undefeated the rest of the way.

“The girls dug in,” he said. “A lot of determination and will for these girls at 14 years old, some of them are turning 15 this year. (It) was pretty tremendous for these ladies.”

The provincials marked the end of the year for the team, who went to six tournaments throughout the year, including provincials. The team consisted of seven players from the Battlefords, and three from Witchekan Lake First Nation. Leslie said its a good showing for the sport in the Battlefords.

“There are 22 active girls that want to actively play volleyball,” he said. “Hopefully we still see the desire to play next year.”

As for the 17U Impact, they didn’t get the result they were hoping for, but the bronze medal in Division 1 is still a feat to be recognized, Leslie said.

“They’ve been battling to be number one in the province this whole season,” he said. “A very big success for them as well, and they’re building to go off onto nationals here in about a month.”
