It was packed stands and a great few days of volleyball this past weekend at John Paul II Collegiate as the Crusaders senior boys got second place in their home volleyball tournament.

“The stands were packed and lots of people came out so that definitely helped us out a little bit, so it was nice to see all the support we had,” Head Coach of JPII Senior Boys Volleyball, Shelly Fransoo said.

The tournament had eight teams competing throughout the weekend that included Melfort, Humboldt, Walter Murray, Moose Jaw Central, North Battleford Comp., Lloydminster Comp., Warman and JPII.

Each team played seven, two set, round robin games and based on the results, the top four teams advanced to the playoffs.

Out of the seven games, JPII beat Walter Murray, NBCHS and Humboldt. They tied with Warman, MJ Central and Melfort and their only loss came against Lloydminster Comp. The Crusaders won nine out of a total of 14 sets which was tied for second best of the round robin and put them through to the playoffs.

In the semi-finals the Crusaders took on Warman and it was a tightly contested matchup. JPII ended up falling in the first set by a score of 25-18. In the second set, the Crusaders were able to bounce back winning 25-15 to tie it 1-1 and force a third set. The third set was about as close as it could get, coming down to a few final rallies and JPII ended up taking the set 18-16 to advance to the finals.

It was JPII vs. Lloydminster for the finals and the Crusaders were looking for redemption as Lloydminster was their only loss during the round robin. Unfortunately, JPII got off to a rough start and lost the first set 25-15. The Crusaders did show signs of greatness in the second set and made it a close one, but ultimately, they ended up losing the set 25-21 and Lloydminster won the tournament.

“Overall it was a good weekend for the team, they played really well and we are happy with the result. We are a 4A school so it feels good to know that we can compete with the bigger 5A schools. Now we are getting ready for Lloydminster this weekend and we are hoping for a good result there too.” Fransoo said.

The JPII senior boys volleyball team heads to Lloydminster this weekend for another tournament and will possibly have a chance to face off against Lloydminster Comp. again.

The JPII junior boys were also in Maidstone this past weekend and lost in the bronze medal match to finish fourth out of 16 teams.
