Childerhose promoted to North Stars Head Coach, GM

The Battlefords North Stars have a new man who will be calling the shots in town for this upcoming season.

After the departure of former head coach and general manager Brayden Klimosko, who went on to coach his hometown Broncos, the North Stars have decided to promote their Associate Coach, Garry Childerhose.

Childerhose, a 34-year-old native of Battleford, joined the North Stars organization prior to the 2021/22 season, as he was named the team’s assistant coach.

He earned the title of associate coach the very next year, where he helped coach the North Stars to a league title and national final appearance.

“As president, I am very proud to have Garry Childerhose (Chilly) take over as Head Coach and GM of our team,” said Stars’ President, Kyle Kellgren. “Having a hometown boy who played his minor hockey career in the Battlefords is a very special moment for our board and our community.”

Childerhose also has connections to the northeast Saskatchewan area, as he spent three seasons with the Melfort Mustangs.

From 2007 to 2010, Childerhose suited up 136 times for the Blue and Green, where he produced a combined 33 goals and 60 assists for 93 points.

Following his career with the Stangs, he played four seasons for the SUNY-Geneseo Knights in the NCAA Division III ranks. In 34 contests, he had 14 points.

Immediately after his time as a Knight (his final season was 2013/14), he returned to the SJHL to become an assistant coach with the Flin Flon Bombers, where he also served as their assistant GM for two seasons.

Childerhose would stay in Northern Manitoba until the end of the 2018/19 campaign, before a one-year stint as the Kindersley Klippers head coach in the 2019/20 season.

“I’m honoured and excited for the opportunity to be the next Head Coach and General Manager for the Battlefords North Stars. Working with, and learning from two great coaches and CJHL Coaches of the Year (Brayden Klimosko and Mike Reagan) for the past eight seasons has been tremendous for my growth as a coach and I couldn’t be more grateful,” Childerhose explained.

“Being a Battlefords local, I began coming to the games at the age of two and that’s where my love for the game took off. I’m thankful for the opportunity and take great pride in representing the community of the Battlefords and the North Stars Organization.”

Childerhose will see his former leader Brayden Klimosko and the Humboldt Broncos a total of eight times this season, with the first matchup set for Oct. 11 at the Access Communications Centre in North Battleford.

Battleford is now searching for their new assistant coach. More details on the position and how to apply can be found on the North Stars social media pages.
