Battlefords area teen recognized

A 15-year-old boy from Cochin was recently recognized on a national stage.

Christopher Sanford Beck was one of ten recipients in the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s (NCTR) Imagine a Canada initiative. The teen was honoured in a ceremony yesterday, March 1, at Rideau Hall in Ottawa which included Governor General David Johnston.

“Oh it feels great, I’m a little overwhelmed to be honest. But no it feels great,” Sanford Beck said of his win.

The national competition open to kids in Grades 1 through 12 asked students what they thought Canada would look like if the country reconciled its residential school system.

His winning entry was a short story set in 2036 about a white family taking part in a local Cree reserve’s culture festival.

“What I wanted to do with it was to provide a snapshot into simple ways that people can work towards reconciliations,” Sanford Beck said.

During the ceremony, he was able to meet with the other nine recipients from across Canada.

“I got to see their submissions, their artwork, poetry and stuff like that,” Sanford Beck said.

“It was really nice to see what others had contributed and all the different ideas coming from Canada’s young people.”
